10 Year Anniversary Bash!

The Invisible Institute formed to combat official secrecy by ensuring the public has access to police misconduct records and rigorous reporting, both crucial for communities to be able to challenge state-sanctioned violence. The effort brought together journalists, data scientists, and a civil rights lawyer to form a human rights reporting nonprofit on the South Side of Chicago. 

For nearly a decade, our founder Jamie Kalven reported from within high-rise public housing. Jamie’s journalism sparked a series of federal civil rights lawsuits and a concerted Freedom of Information Act strategy that culminated in a landmark 2014 case, Kalven v. Chicago, which made police misconduct records public across Illinois. The Invisible Institute formed and launched the Civic Police Data Project (CPDP.co) one year later, making hundreds of thousands of police misconduct reports widely available. 

This year we are marking our ten year anniversary with a two-part 10 Year Anniversary Bash! For this once in a decade moment, we have crafted an event that honors the relationships of the past, present, and future. During the cocktail reception starting at 6pm, staff will be available to discuss upcoming investigations and talk shop. When the party begins at 7pm, we will celebrate our origins, enjoy each other’s company, and build connections for the road ahead.
